Roberta Gillespie was diagnosed with cancer. In a personal interview between mother and daughter, Sakina Gillespie, 31, tells her mom what it was like to hear the doctor give her mom this horrible news and how grateful that she is now cancer free.
In 2007, I found out that I had cancer. It was the worst day of my life. All I kept saying to myself: "Am I going to die," as the tears rolled down my face. At that time, I did not know what my daughter was feeling or thinking. Here is a conversation between me and my daughter. Roberta: The day we were in the doctor's office and she said I had cancer how did you feel? Sakina: I was shaking, but then my instinct kicked in. How do we beat this? I was eager to start the process of getting mom better and back on her feet. Roberta: Did you think about me not making it? Sakina: No because God has the last word, and I felt he would see us through it all. | Sakina is an incredible daughter; she a great sister, an auntie, and most of all, she is a wonderful mother and my best friend. From when I was a little girl I always heard the older people talking. That God does everything for a reason and I believe that. It brought me and my daughter closer than ever before. It also taught me how to enjoy life and to think about today not what happened yesterday, because life is too short. My work is not done yet; God has a plan for me. I"M A CANCER SURIVOR FOR 6 YEARS. I would like to thank my daughter for all that she does in our family. Your mother loves you with all of her heart. | Roberta: How did you feel about taking all the responsibility? Sakina: I have always been the older and more responsible sibling and acted like a big sister like I am supposed to do. I just did what needed to be done. My little brother is the emotional one out the two of us. Roberta: How did you feel about my last radiation treatment? Sakina: I was so happy it was over because it was a long process, and I knew it was hard on your body. I hated to see you suffer and at the end you survived. That’s one of the best gifts that God gave me and that was you Mommy; I love you. |
