A couple of weeks ago my cousin and I decided to head to Clifton's AMC theater to watch Disney's Maleficent featuring Angelina Jolie. I know...I know...a child's movie; but as a woman, you can never outgrow a good princess flick. Anyway, just like all Disney movies there is always something to learn, and this film was no exception. So, here's a quick back story on the movie: If you are familiar with Sleeping Beauty, then you should be familiar with the evil fairy queen who cast a sleeping spell on Princess Aurora. However, this story is not like the original 1959 version. Instead, we encounter a different kind of fairy: playful, friendly, innocent and carefree. From the fairytale, Maleficent goes through several transformations that are key learning experiences or teachable moments that one can take note of. | #1. Betrayal In life we will encounter people who we love and trust and never think twice about being stabbed in the back. Literally, this is exactly what happened to Maleficent when her wings were clipped by a dear friend. Now, once you've been betrayed, sometimes it can be very difficult to move past it. Some people are so hurt that it becomes hard to let go of the pain. This is where it can get dangerous because now you have the fuel for anger. #2. Hatred They say "hell knows no fury like a woman scorned," and in this case this statement can't be further from the truth. When anger creeps its way into the heart, it begins to fester. The longer it continues to vex the heart, it makes a way for hatred to take over. | Maleficent's betrayal brought her to a place of darkness. It rooted deep into her very soul. Sometimes we wait for the moment for payback believing this is how to settle the score. It is this attitude that leads us to the path of destruction, and if we are not careful, it might come back to terrorize us in the end. #3. Revenge What's interesting about revenge is that it always almost involve the innocent. We are ready to hurt the one who hurt us by hurting the ones or something they love the most. Talk about tit for tat! We won't stop at nothing until our vengeance is extracted. The sad thing is that road leads to nowhere. In the end, Maleficent plans for the perfect revenge but something happens that she did not expect. Her cold heart began to feel a warmth that she tried hard to hold back. Love. This is the lesson: When people let us down and hurt us to the core love is the underlying element that truly conquers all. |
