Art is an expression of beauty in the eyes of the beholder. It points to forms, shapes, colors, and depths in paintings, sculptures etc. The main objective of art is to enliven the senses and quicken the mind to a imagined environment.
Paterson's art pieces did just that for me. First, I walked down the street, and my eyes were caught up with colorful paintings of alluring colors exemplifying Carribean culture. I asked the artist Jeffery Sobers from Plainfield, NJ, his source of inspiration. He revealed to me that quite by accident he found artifacts of others and was inspired to paint.
Next I was mesmerized by the masterful art of Rosa Park students. Each chose a state park depicting the grandeur of nature in oil paintings and still life. | The work was so realistic; I felt I was right there. Did you know children's drawings show how they perceive an inner world? How refreshing that they noted "whatsoever things were lovely." |
The most significant work of art was perhaps the saddest one. It was important because of the message conveyed in its images. The artist created a hologram. A hologram is a series of 3D images produced by interferences of patterns of light. The title was called "Catch a Body." Contained within was a graphic presentation of victims of senseless violence throughout the United States. Accompanied with the pictures was a glaring video portrayal of each person.
Another effective depiction of art was without a name but powerfully positioned by a number of doors. For example, entering a door named "Wealth" might conceal another door called "Greed" opening to a final door called "Poverty." | Each door when entered into led to a corridor of other doors. The doors were sharp reminders that choices in life must be carefully selected. Opening one door could close another with dire consequences. The unnamed piece was greatly entertaining. |
As stated earlier, the mind is truly engaged while observing any work of art. My mind was exhilarated by the landscape pieces of the Russian female artist Alex Losett. Her polished work showed depth and creativity illustrated by an ordinary rock formation in its minimal landscape. Even her placement of leaves on a sewer grate added texture to the painting.
