Myths You can not catch HIV by being around people who are HIV-positive. No, you can not catch HIV from mosquitoes. There is no evidence to support this. You can not get infected if you you've shared a cup or utensils with someone who has HIV. An HIV-positive person can still spread the virus even though they are receiving treatment. You can not tell if someone is HIV positive because sometimes symptoms don't show up for years. | TransmissionHIV can be transmitted by certain fluids: blood, semen, pre seminal fluid, vaginal fluid, rectal fluid and breast milk. The virus spreads through having unprotected sex. Anal sex is the highest-risk sexual behavior where vaginal sex is the second highest risk. You can also get the virus by sharing needles, syringes, or rinse water. Another high risk factor is engaging in sex with multiple partners or engaging in oral sex without a barrier of protection. | PreventionAbstinence or use a condom every time you engage in sexual activity to reduce risk of HIV. Don't share needles. Get tested and know your status. Be in a long-term relationship with an uninfected partner.
